I first met Dominic Inouye in the Marshall Building, where we were scheduled to meet up and revise my artist statement for the MARN Mentor/Mentee program. The second thing I noticed about him was a sense of style.. he had a beautiful hand-crafted messenger bag. I say second because the first thing I noticed was how tall he was, even seated… but when you are five feet tall, everyone seems tall. Tallness aside, we spent some time together, collective pens swirling trails of ink across pages. He used teacher red ink, mine was fountain pen black.
A few months later, Dominic invited me to participate in his ZIPMKE fundraiser. Then, once it was announced that I would be the AIR this year, he was the first person to interview me. I was glad it was someone I already knew… made it just a little more gentle to ease into the awkwardness of semi-public life. When I saw the story, I was so pleased. he hit the nail right on the head.
Thank you for the gift of this experience, Dominic.
