<image:caption>Gallery sitting at Spectrum. Scholastic Juror at Milwaukee Art Museum. It’s always good to see what the young folks are creating. Tried a new hotpot restaurant, it’s already closed. Saw DeMar Walker’s film debut of “The Refrain” at his Arts@Large residency. Our house contracted a nasty stomach bug, cancelling a residency in the U.P. I’d been looking forward to for nearly six months. There was an emergency room visit involved, a sign of what the year was to bring. Namely, deep losses of income and a lot of lost time. It was pretty devastating. Participated in a smoking study, which I failed after the inauguration. Life as we know it begins to feel palpably desolate.</image:caption>

More dental work is needed, but insurance won’t cover most of it. My long arm quilting machine tablet broke. The company says it’s because the batteries are expanding, but I think it’s poor design. Made pizza, paneer and yogurt. Mark brewed beer in the garage. We kept our hands busy to soothe worried minds. Took the Valentine’s Day tour at Great Lakes Distillery. It was snowy and spectacular, and much needed reprieve from daily struggles. Went to the Black Feminist Symposium at UWM. Bronzeville Center for the Arts Gallery 507 soft opening, “Quilting in Contemporary Art: Stitching Our Stories” with Jamin Mahan and Karla Martin. Honored with a Black Excellence Award alongside Sherri Williams Pannell and Sande Robinson.</image:caption>

The tub has become my personal refuge. Saw Kierston Ghaznavi’s solo show, “3:33 am: recent works” at Jazz Gallery in Riverwest. She is magical. - Saw Nicole Acosta and Rene Amado’s artist talks for Racine Art Museum at the Johnson Foundation’s Wingspread. I’ve enjoyed painting here a couple of times, and was happy to show up for these two. Finished first piece for WIMQFA Digital Humanities Fellow. This project has been challenging and I am woefully behind, but I think it’s worth the struggle. I owe the museum an accountability letter on why this project still isn’t finished. I accept the reality that I’m not able to work at my fullest capacity right now. The world is on fire, and we’re doing the best that we can.</image:caption>

She also supported me during my Milwaukente community dye workshops with RAM at Spectrum. Got a wild email from someone posing as a local author. The vehicle promptly began breaking down. I have a two year warranty, and this is the worst relationship I have ever been in.</image:caption>

I joined the gallery as a member because Denise was the only person I asked who offered to let me use her space for less than thousands of dollars. I spent the month working on “Moanin in muddy waters” triptych for the Baird center Figure drawing at Draw Joseph studio, where I remembered how enjoyable it is to draw nudes and not talk to anyone while Lou Reed screams through my headphones.</image:caption>

Community dinner for Growing Resistance at MIAD, met Marlon Hall Saw Della’s work become part of the Milwaukee Art Museum permanent collection Started petite portrait studio sessions, did roughly a dozen. <image:caption>Taught a workshop at “Invitation to vocation”, celebrating Venice William’s 35 anniversary in ministry. I am in perpetual awe of how connected she is to her congregation, and how much room she continues to create around her. Taught a workshop at the bell hooks Symposium. Driving to Kentucky with kits, car broke down in indiana, causing lots of grief, including missing my appointment for the bell hooks Archive. Took car to a dealership in Lexington, where they showed used parts that were put back into the car for repair, causing the breakdown this time.Yelled at by the Wisconsin dealership owner, who told me he wouldn’t spend any more money on the vehicle (forgetting that I had a two year extended warranty). Stuck in Kentucky for three additional days. Made the most of it by eating the first peaches of the season and watching trash television with Shadee. Delivered Vel n Em to Greenwood Park Gallery and Framing for framing and installation at ThriveOn project on King Drive. Mark built himself a driveway to go with the garage. Participated in Lakefront Festival of Art at the Milwaukee Art Museum as the poster artist, and managed to make it to an Iron and Wine concert but missed out on artist drinking and comisseration because of additional car problems. More plein air painting at Wingspread, might turn the piece into a textile, but who knows? Took our maiden voyage in Pickles, the vintage winnebago travel trailer I got to do plein air and workshops on the road</image:caption>

Spent a week as political refugees at Western Hills Garden to avoid the RNC and anticipated violence (Out of state officers shot and killed a homeless man). Spent time under redwoods and near the ocean. Stopped in Berkeley for an evening to hang out with Lauren’s family (happy birthday Mia!) and ate dinner with midwestern friends Georgina and Dan. Trapped in Las Vegas airport for many hours, delayed due to international computer breakdown. Plane almost crashed when we got home. Had to break into our own house. Finished Alice Visions Octavia, now in the permanent collection of UW Whitewater Crossman Gallery. Cyanotype workshop for teens at MAM Spent much time at the beach and at state parks, remembering to protect public green spaces, waterways, and parks through letters and phone calls.</image:caption>

Arianne at Lynden for annual indigo dye workshops, she invited me to Cuba for a cultural exchange, doing dye workshops in a yoruba village in Havana. Board a flight to cuba. CUBA! (separate post eventually) Cecelia Gilbert passed away, and the city mourned. WQMFA Digital Humanities fellowship announced, I get to chat with and document a small sample of the state’s textile artists in a listening project turned podcast. Pretty delightful. <image:caption>Cultural Artist exchange in Cuba with Arianne and Hank! Second year of participating in Sketch Racine, which culminated in a return to the underground railroad church I visited on a walking tour in first grade. I never forgot that experience. Finished the Basilica textile. Installed solo show at Museum of Wisconsin Art on the Lake, did the opening talk, show runs til Dec 15th. ”Fiber Connections” opening at UW Whitewater Crossman Gallery, students voted to add “Alice Visions Octavia” to the permanent collection. Opening at “Criss Cross: Seams II” at Portrait Society Gallery, re-encounter illustrator extraordinaire Emil Ferris, spent the night chatting away with her in a dark corner. Celebrated our anniversary at Kohler Andrae state park, saw a gorgeous solar rainbow. Mark gifted me a litho from his uncle Paul Yank thatI fell in love with it on a visit to his studios last year. Visited Kohler art preserve. Remembered that the Kohler company wants to privatize portions of this state park to expand their golf course, and I hate that we are losing public waterway access for rich folks to have more places to golf.</image:caption>

Mark has been building this thing mostly by hand, with a little help from our friends and family, and not very much from me. Don’t worry, I’m apparently going to learn how to install drywall and tile very soon, if he doesn’t fire me from the site first.</image:caption>

We’re feasting on the season’s jewels: glorious cherries, watermelon, and peaches. It’s summer in Harambee, but the scent of fall is coming in soft. I’m still working on a bunch of things, but am going to try to squeeze some more juice out of this summer while it lasts. Here’s what’s happening, and what to look forward to.</image:caption>

The work depicts my own interpretations Ma Rainey, Geeshie Wiley and Elvie (L.V.) Thomas, and a midwestern iteration of a diasporan water spirit Mami Fresh Wata. <image:caption>"bell hooks" at Berea College, 2021 "bell hooks" is a fabric portrait I made as the inaugural artist in residence at the bell hooks Center at Berea College. I made a 6 week solo journey from Milwaukee through the south to visit with artists and culture bearers, landing for a month at the college. I had the pleasure of sitting with bell at her home before getting to work, and am honored to have been able to make this piece before she transitioned.</image:caption>
